Forget Lonely Planet or Frommer's. If you want a guidebook on the Big Island, this is it. A friend lent us the 2nd edition, but little has changed on Hawai'i that the 1999 copy is still relevant (save for some new lava fields created after 1999). We love the breezy writing style and the anecdotes. The Volcanoes National Park doesn't sell the book at its shops anymore because the book gives too much away, especially about the gaffes that the HVNP people have made - all the more reason to buy this book! To us the best thing about The Big Island Revealed is that every geocache location appears to be mentioned! So we say if you don't geocache, then you'll need this book as a guide. To us, it just helps explain to people who think we only visited BI to geocache that we really did want to sightsee. Can we help it that there's something hidden in all the spots we visited? ;)
